We’ve all heard that pesky rule about not wearing white after Labor Day. As soon as this long weekend passes, we have to put all our white sundresses in the back of our closet in favor of darker, more fall-friendly tones. However, we’ve been seeing trendsetters pushing this boundary recently and we are living for it. The days of being told when to where what color are finally coming to an end. So how about black for Spring? If you are like me, your closet is a sea of black dresses, tops, pants, and shoes. What can I say, black just always looks good! To celebrate breaking the boundary on season specific colors, let’s look at five ways to style your black dresses this spring.
1. The Casual Everyday Look
I live in short, breezy black dresses in the springtime. There are an infinite amount of ways to style a casual black dress depending on your individual taste. One of my personal favorite ways to rock a black dress for casual daytime wear starts with a lightweight material. A loose-fitting cotton tee shirt dress or a more fitted tank style are perfect for everyday wear. You can pair this type of black dress with strappy sandals and some layered gold jewelry for a more feminine touch. Or go for a sporty look and pair it with some white sneakers and a baseball cap for a trendy and comfortable style. This is an incredibly easy look to accomplish and will look amazing on just about everyone.
2. For a Night Out
White can be a logistical nightmare when heading out at night for drinks. Being in a bar with tons of people moving around and drinking things like vodka and cranberry or anything with blue curacao is a risk to your white clothing. We are so ready to ditch the pastels this Spring, especially for a night out. Slip dresses seem to be coming back into style lately and we think they are perfect for a spring night out. I love the silky and short form fitting styles with a little slit up the leg. Their soft feminine material and style balances out the dark color and makes it perfect for the spring. My favorite way to style it is with a pair of strappy black heels, minimal jewelry, a messy bun, and a super cute mini bag. This look will keep you cool and comfortable while dancing with your girls even as the summer heat sets in.
3. Style for Spring Vacay
If you are headed to the beach for a getaway this spring, we’ve come across a look that is to die for. In the past, it’s been maxi dresses all the way. A vacation isn’t complete without the perfect spring maxi. However, we think we’ve found something even better. We are talking about the two-piece dresses with wrap skirts and cropped tank or tube tops that look absolutely stunning for the beach. Pick up one of these in black and pair it with some thin, dainty body chains, beach waves and a tan for a look that all your friends will be envious of.
4. For Brunch with the Girls
When it comes to black dresses for brunch, we like to soften this look with some white accents. A monochromatic look is eye-catching and perfect for a morning of mimosas with your girlfriends. I love doing a flowy baby doll style dress with some chunky white heels and a little white handbag. Add in a floppy white sun hat with a black bow to accent the black dress for an Insta-worthy OOTD.
5. Formal Events
Spring is always jam packed with events. Between weddings, bridal or baby showers and garden parties, spring is the perfect time to have a special occasion. When it comes to formal events, black dresses are always going to be an elegant and timeless option even in the warmer months. To style a black dress for an upscale gathering, you’ll want to choose the right material. Things like silk, lace, or linen in black will be appropriate for spring events without looking out of season. Something that shows a bit of skin will also help the dress look more delicate. A backless or strappy dress with a flowy skirt in any of these materials will look chic and sophisticated. Try this look with a pair of statement heels, or a statement bag to draw the eye.
Black for Spring is In!
To all the black clothing enthusiasts, black is definitely in for spring this year. Don’t spend time stressing about styling pastels and light colors that are out of your comfort zone and make your black dresses work for spring instead. Fashion rules are really more like guidelines anyway, so have fun and wear what makes you feel amazing!
