different shoes on the floor

You’re putting away your winter wardrobe and cashing them in for shorts and tees. Of course, you should also cycle in some new pairs of shoes.

Not sure how to style yourself for summer? Keep reading to learn common summer shoe mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Wearing Flip Flops

Flip flops are a nightmare for podiatrists everywhere. These flimsy shoes don’t have any support for your arches or toes, so you could develop a condition called plantar fasciitis, which causes shooting pain and irritation in the heels and between.

Plantar fasciitis also means you may develop heel spurs, an often painful bony outgrowth that forms at the bottom of the foot. Flip flops can even cause dysfunction of the nerves and difficulty walking.

Really, flip flops don’t offer much support and leave your feet exposed to environmental dangers. In addition, flip flops don’t provide any shock absorption, so the bones in your soles take a lot of pressure. Lastly, they could cause worse posture or injury.

2. Wearing the Wrong Type for Shoe For Your Foot

If someone can hear your shoes squeaking from 20 yards away, you’re wearing the wrong type of shoe for your feet. When you slip on a pair of sandals.

If you have high arches, some summer shoe options may not support you properly. You can look for sandals made for those with high arches, but ultimately, the best style of shoe is probably a lightweight sneaker. These are perfect for styling summer outfits.

3. Socks

There are many fashion faux pas when it comes to socks and summer. First of all, when you think about your summer shoe options, remember, no socks with sandals. Sandals are designed to protect your feet without being overly restrictive.

Wearing socks with sandals is counterintuitive and not a great look. If you’re wearing socks to avoid blisters or skin irritation, try these methods:

  • Break in your sandals by wearing a few pairs of socks and walk around the house for a few days
  • Make sure you have the correct size
  • Add a thin layer of talcum powder around the heel strap or other places the fabric irritates your skin
  • Line the sandals with a thin, soft fabric like moleskin
  • Take good care of your feet by getting pedicures or regularly moisturizing

Now that the hotter months are here, you should be retiring your wooly winter socks. Instead, look for socks that wick away moisture and will keep your feet cool. Breathable materials include bamboo, modal, lightweight wool, and Olefin.

Cotton and cotton blend socks are more likely to cause your feet to sweat and stink.

Lastly, if you’re wearing a pair of shorts, your socks shouldn’t show above your shoes. Opt for some no-shows.

4. Wearing the Same Sneakers All Year

The average pair of sneakers last around 10 months.

If you wear the same pair of shoes day in and day out, they are more likely to wear out faster and cause discomfort. Additionally, when your feet sweat, it’s absorbed by your shoes, so you should give them a day to dry out before putting them back on. If you don’t switch it up, your risk of fungal infections rises.

If you experience foot or leg pain after a day on your feet, try adding a new pair of sneakers into your weekly outfit rotation.
