Senior woman with shoulder pain

Arthritis is the name given to swelling and tenderness in your joints. It can affect one joint or many joints in your body. It is painful and for many people, it will last for life, some are lucky and the pain passes after a few years!

All types of arthritis should be seen and diagnosed by a doctor. But, certain types of arthritis, such as shoulder arthritis, can have a significant detrimental effect on quality of life as they reduce mobility. The first step in retaining life quality is to reduce the pain, there are several natural techniques that work.

Understanding Arthritis

Every joint in your body has a thin layer of cartilage in it. This compound cushions the joint, allowing the bones to roll smoothly against each other. When the cartilage is damaged, the bones can grate against each other. This causes inflammation and pain.

It is often caused by normal wear and tear, i.e. regular pressure on the joints. It can also be the result of an infection, substance abuse, autoimmune disease, and simply trauma.

The risk of arthritis increases with age, women are more likely to get it than men, and being obese or having a family history also increases the risk of getting arthritis.

Yoga

One of the most effective ways to reduce or eliminate the pain of arthritis is by indulging in some yoga exercises. These are designed to gently stretch your joints and, at the same time, free your mind. It has a similar effect to meditation and can relieve the pain, even if only temporary.

Your Diet

You may be surprised to discover that what you eat affects the amount of arthritis pain you get! Research shows that a Mediterranean diet can reduce inflammation in your body. This will reduce the pain and increase the mobility of the joint. Aim to eat whole grains, fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, and olive oil.

Use Heat

Heat is a great way to relax your muscles and reduce inflammation. You can make your own heat pad by putting rice in a sock and sealing the end. Then, heat it in the microwave whenever you need it. Or, you can simply purchase a heating pad.

Press the heat pad against your shoulder and you’ll feel it relaxing the joint.

Drink Green Tea

Research has shown that drinking four cups of green tea a day. It is rich in antioxidants which are also anti-inflammatory. In short, drink the tea and the pain of your shoulder arthritis will diminish!

Swimming

Exercise is one of the best things you can do but this can be hard if the exercise involves moving your shoulder and antagonizing the joint. But, if you start swimming regularly you’ll be able to exercise the joint without the tension that so many exercises place on joints.

It reduces pain and improves mobility in your shoulder.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are great for joints and for brain health. You can get this vital fatty acid from fish but, if you’re not eating enough fish, it may be advisable to take a supplement. You will quickly notice the difference.
