Every year, more than 6.5 million visitors fly into Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, one of several airports on the island.

While COVID-19 may have caused a temporary drop in tourism, with some countries already beginning to resume operations, it’s only a matter of time before people from around the world begin visiting this tropical paradise once more.

If you’re planning a visit to Bali, you might be wondering what there is to do beyond the beautiful beaches and famous bungalow. With a rich and dynamic history, Bali is packed with other destinations, including plenty of temples and other historic sites. One such site is the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park.

Keep reading to learn more about the park, the best time of year to visit, and whether you should purchase your tickets in advance.

What is the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park?

The Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park is a famous landmark that celebrates both the cultural and religious history of Bali.

Throughout the cultural park, you’ll find a variety of statues depicting characters from the Hindu religion. There are also park theater events where local Balinese performers demonstrate traditional dances, music, and art.

These performances occur every day on a set schedule. If you have your heart set on seeing a particular performance, check the schedule ahead of your visit to ensure that you get to the park early enough.

Near the center of the park, you’ll find its crowning jewel; the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue. This massive statue, the tallest in Bali, depicts the Hindu God Wisnu and the mythical eagle, Garuda. The latter is the national symbol of Indonesia.

Standing more than 120 feet higher than the Statue of Liberty, you can climb to the top of the statue for an additional fee that’s not included in the cost of admission to the park.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Park?

Bali is beautiful all year long. But while this tropical island enjoys year-round temperatures ranging from the mid-80s to the low 90s (Fahrenheit), it doesn’t mean that you’ll enjoy sunny skies any time you visit.

Instead, Bali experiences two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. From November to the end of March, Bali experiences a rainy season that can leave visitors drenched. This makes outdoor activities like visiting the Cultural Park miserable.

But from April to October, Bali’s dry season welcomes visitors with plenty of sunshine and warm, dry days.

The peak season for visitors to Bali runs from late June to late August. If you want to enjoy fewer crowds in the nation’s most popular destinations, it’s best to visit from April to mid-June, or in September or early October.

Should Your Buy Tickets in Advance?

Because of its size, the Cultural Park can accommodate many visitors. But on a nice day during the busy season, it’s always a good idea to purchase tickets in advance to ensure that you can get in.
Even during less-busy times of the year, buying your tickets in advance can help ensure you get to visit and don’t wind up disappointed.

You can purchase tickets to the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park in advance online. Keep in mind that these tickets allow you to get into the park, enjoy all performances, and even bring home a souvenir. They don’t include extras like climbing the statue.
